Is there caffeine in matcha tea, if yes how much?

Well, the answer is 35mg of caffeine in matcha tea for every serving. That is if you make your matcha with 1g or ½ a level teaspoon of powder. So yes, there is caffeine in matcha tea powder.

How does this compare to tea and coffee?

Now we know what you are going to say; 35mg caffeine content in matcha is only a number, what does it actually mean?

The best way to look at how much caffeine can be found in matcha tea is to compare it with other drinks such as tea and coffee.

Instant tea & coffee

A standard cup of black tea is known to have around 42mg of caffeine in it and a mug of instant coffee has around 60mg of caffeine in it.

Caffeine in matcha v coffee shop coffee

If you like to buy your coffee when you're out and about it is likely to contain 70mg to 185mg of caffeine (depending on the brand). This is often why a lot of people turn to matcha, as they get the energy boost without the anxiety associated with the high caffeine content in coffee.

Comparison

When compared, Matcha comes out on top as it will give you an energy boost without disturbing your sleep. Be sure to consume no caffeine after 2pm :)

How much is recommended every day?

So now you know that there is almost 60-185mg of caffeine in a single cup of coffee, you might want to know more about how much you should drink in one day.

We recommended that you do not consume more than 200mg of caffeine in a day.

The reason for this is to keep within the lower recommended caffeine limit of 200mg.

Isn’t even a small amount of caffeine bad for you?

Whilst there are some side effects associated to drinking too much caffeine, the truth is that caffeine can be good for you. It can stimulate your mind and body into moving and get your blood pumping. But you can always have too much of a good thing.

Hey Aggie. Yes 1/2 a heaped teaspoon is perfectly fine :)

What about for a slightly larger serving, eg. 16oz mug? Would you still recommend only a 1/2 level teaspoon, as I find with that much water using a slightly heaped 1/2 tsp is better flavour. (Bearing in mind that this is my only caffeinated drink of the day.) Thanks

Hello Regina. The caffeine values have been come from the reliable source, Caffeine Informer. Please note that we recommend only using 1g (1/2 a level tsp) of matcha per serving. On Caffeine Informer they carried out a test on 2g (1 tsp).
