There have been many arguments over the years as to whether diet plays a part in acne or whether it has no bearing on it at all. But a study in 2013 seemed to find that there was a link between diet and acne.
Is sugar the culprit?
One part of the study involved foods that were high in GI; this includes sugary fizzy drink, pastries and chocolate. These foods can cause a spike in the insulin (among other hormones) production within our bodies. Insulin in turn can stimulate the skin cells to produce oils which will clog up the pores; causing spots to form on the surface of the skin.
Milk to blame?
Milk was also a part of the study; looking at people who drank a high amount of milk on a daily basis. Milk contains a particular growth hormone IGF-1 which is known to increase insulin production; so much like foods that are high in sugar, milk may also block the pores and cause spots.
So what foods are good to eat?
We have explored the foods that might be having a negative impact on your skin, but what things can you eat to see an improvement?
Brazil nuts- not only a tasty snack, Brazil nuts also contain selenium which is a powerful antioxidant and protects the cells from inflammation.
Oysters- they may not be everyone’s favourite food, but oysters are absolutely packed full with zinc which can control the release of the acne causing male hormones. Zinc can also be found in poultry, fish and beans.
Salmon- and other fatty fish are well known to contain the powerhouse that is omega-3 fatty acids. These keep inflammation to a minimum which should have a helping hand with your acne breakouts.
Sweet potato- aside from tasting great, sweet potatoes also contain Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A within your body which gives a helping boost to selenium production!
Of course alongside these great foods you can also drink a daily glass of matcha tea to ensure that your body is getting all those wonderful nutrients that your body needs to look and feel at its best!
